The Triple Glass Difference

May 18, 2016 By MirandaAdmin

Triple pane windows have now become the window of choice for many homeowners. This is not totally surprising, considering the many benefits they offer. Triple pane windows are simply windows with three panes of glass as compared to the usual two panes, with two spacers for gas fill instead of one. So it is not difficult to imagine how they can be beneficial in more than one way.

Especially for houses in harsh climates like in Canada, triple pane windows are highly recommended. Sometimes, even double pane windows just won’t cut it, especially if they are without additional features to enhance their performance.

Let us take a look at some of the many advantages triple pane windows offer.

Triple pane windows are more energy efficient

You can reduce your energy consumption greatly, and save on your heating and cooling bills using triple pane windows. During winter, they help to keep your house warm, while they help to keep it cool during summer. Triple pane windows have a high R-value, which means that they keep the temperature in your room warm when it gets cold by allowing less heat to escape as they have a strong resistance to heat flow.

Moreover, triple pane windows have lower Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC). This means that the glass effectively reflects heat from the sun, keeping your house cool during summer. Triple glazing is more energy-efficient than standard insulation by about 20 percent. Plus, because they have two spacers, more gas can be filled which translates to higher energy efficiency.

Triple pane windows reduce noise coming into your home

The extra glass pane in triple pane windows makes them more soundproof than double pane windows. Often, Energy Star ratings do not consider the ability of windows to prevent sound transmission and reduce noise. Despite this, many homeowners who have bought vinyl windows feel that their old windows are more soundproof than their new ones.

Especially in vinyl triple pane windows, there is a significant reduction in noise entering your home due to the presence of soft spacers between the glazings. This soft foam spacer, also known as SuperSpacer, keeps the three glass panes apart in ideal distances. Apart from improving insulation in your glass panes, this also contributes toward the reduction of sound transmission from outside, considerably reducing noise inside your home.

Triple pane windows have reduced glass condensation

Compared to single or double pane windows, triple pane windows do an extremely good job at reducing condensation on the glass. Condensation is a result of water collecting as droplets on a cold surface, and these droplets come in contact with humid air. If a window has high insulation, then the interior glazing surface’s temperature will be much higher. This means that the chances of condensation are lower.

So, since triple pane windows have three panes of glass, they have a higher insulation, which translates to lower chances of vapour condensing or frosting on the glass. This makes them easier to maintain, especially during rainy and snowy seasons, which Canada has plenty of.

Triple pane windows offer increased security

Another major advantage triple pane windows offer is increased security. The extra pane of glass makes it more difficult for intruders to break-in, thereby increasing safety and security of everyone living in the house, when they are home or away.

Apart from securing your house from unwanted visitors, triple pane windows also safeguard your home from extreme and harsh weather conditions, and they are more wind resistant as well. You can be assured that your home and your family are in safe hands with increased protection and security when you use triple pane windows.
